The Duchess of Edinburgh is continuing the legacy of her mother-in-law, Elizabeth II, as she takes on a patronage close to the late Queen”s heart, the Girl Guides.
Girlguiding was said to be one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most treasured patronages, she took on the role back in 1953, the same year she was crowned. The organisation helps girls and young women achieve their best self through a number of projects and learning opportunities.
It’s a focus that runs in the family as the Duchess spent part of her childhood as a Brownie. Her daughter, Lady Louise Windsor graduated all the way to a Guide.
For the last decade, Sophie has served as Girlguiding’s president. The Duchess of Edinburgh has always had a passion for charities inspiring girls to find their voice as well as making a positive difference in the community.
Chief Guide Tracy Foster says she’s excited about the Duchess’ new role that ”our vision is for an equal world where all girls can make a positive difference, be happy, safe and fulfill their potential. As a champion for gender equality and a passionate advocate for girls and women, The Duchess’s support is invaluable in helping us to make this a reality.’
As she took on her new role, the Duchess accompanied over 100 Brownies, Rangers, and Guiides to make contact with the International Space Station from the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.
