This sapphire brooch has spanned three royal families to become a favourite

The Danish Royal Family has several impressive pieces of jewellery, with many worn only by the current queen. The Connaught Sapphire Brooch can be worn by anyone in the family, though, making it a beautiful and versatile piece.

The Connaught Sapphire Brooch features a large sapphire surrounded by smaller round diamonds with two smaller ropes of pearls beneath and a diamond and pearl floral pendant.

Originally it was a gift to Queen Victoria’s daughter-in-law, Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia, when she married Victoria’s son, the Duke of Connaught in 1879.

Louise Margaret’s daughter, Princess Margaret of Connaught, married Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905. She inherited the impressive brooch from her mother and left it to her own daughter, the future Queen Ingrid of Denmark

Ingrid wore the brooch frequently for family events, and it would quickly be cemented as a go-to piece for christenings, engagements, and more.

Queen Margrethe wore the brooch often, notably for the christening of her grandson in 1999, as well as various state visits.

In 2006, she then gifted the brooch to the then-Crown Princess Mary in honour of the birth of Prince Christian.

Mary wore it for Christian’s christening, as well as Prince Vincent and Princess Isabella’s christening in 2011. The brooch made another poignant appearance in 2023 for Prince Christian’s eighteenth birthday celebrations.
