It’s the biggest royal month of the year – this is what’s happening in June, so far, and it’s busy

It’s a bumper month of royal events this June. In one short month, we get non stop glitz for a golden wedding anniversary, a look back at another famous royal marriage and a hugely important visit. And that’s just for starters. Take a breath and try to keep up.

Sweden

June is always a busy time for Sweden’s royals as the country marks its National Day on June 6. King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria will be at the heart of celebrations as always. Traditional events see the castle doors opened up to visitors at the start of the day’s festivities with Victoria and her husband, Daniel, in charge of proceedings this year. Royal visits across the country will follow and the day wraps up with a reception at the Royal Palace.

But this year, that’s just for starters. Having partied out of April to mark King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 80th birthday, Sweden’s royals are celebrating again in mid June for a very important wedding anniversary. This June 19 will mark 50 years since Carl Gustaf married Silvia Sommerlath, who became a queen on her wedding day. A string of events are planned across several days, culminating in a glittering dinner at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on the anniversary itself.

And that’s not all. Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary on the same day. On June 13, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia mark 11 years as man and wife while Princess Madeleine’s 13th wedding anniversary with Chris O’Neill falls on June 8th. That’s two days before Madeleine turns 44 and a whole week before their son, Prince Nicolas, is 11.

Spain

Spain’s royals will also be front and centre in June. The month starts with a visit from that other uber glamourous royal couple, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene, who will be in Madrid to mark the 150th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Spain and Monaco. No one really cares, they just want to see the fashion face off between two of the continent’s most style conscious consorts.

Just days later, King Felipe and Queen Letizia will welcome Pope Leo XIV to Spain as he begins a six day visit to the country. It will be the highest profile visit of his Pontificate so far. Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia will also help host the Pope as he visits Madrid and Barcelona.

Monaco

Monaco holds the glam card this June as it celebrates one of the ultimate 20th century princesses. On June 8th, a special exhibition marking the 70th anniversary of the marriage of Grace Kelly opens in the Principality she made her own. Prince Rainier III also features in this brand new display all about Grace and the day she became Princess of Monaco.

At the start of the month, Rainier and Grace’s son, Prince Albert, helps host the F1 at Monte Carlo while June also brings the uber stylish Monte Carlo Television Festival to the sunshine royals.

Denmark

King Frederik and Queen Mary start June with their traditional summer cruise. The four day excursion will take them to different parts of Denmark on the royal yacht. The couple are enjoying a surge of popularity and big crowds are expected on their packed itinerary.

All eyes will also be on Queen Margrethe who has several engagements lined up in June after a bout of ill health in May. The former monarch was taken to hospital twice in May and needed treatment for heart problems and a blood clot. She is now resting at home and hopes to make her appearances in June.

Norway

Norway’s royals will be hoping for a quiet June as they cope with a number of major issues. Crown Princess Mette-Marit is now very unwell with pulmonary fibrosis and her husband, Crown Prince Haakon, is cutting short a visit to Japan at the start of June to be with her. Their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is also making her way back from Australia where she is studying to be with her mother.

Queen Sonja is hoping to return to duties after ill health. The 88 year old was in hospital at the end of May with heart problems. The only surviving sister of King Harald, Princess Astrid, is also recovering after being unwell. The 94 year old still carries out royal duties when well enough.
