ver fifty places around the UK and the Commonwealth have applied for city status to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Her Majesty will make the decision on which towns are given the honour as she marks the 70th anniversary of her reign. The final choice will be made on ministerial advice.
At the time of her Diamond Jubilee, in 2012, four areas were made into cities, one in each constituent part of the United Kingdom. However, in 2022, no announcement has been made on how many areas will receive the honour.
The Platinum Jubilee Civic Honours competition is also different from past races as it is the first time that towns in Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies have been invited to take part. The total number of applications include places from around the world.
Existing cities have also been able to apply for Lord Mayor or Lord Provost status.
The final list will be announced in the coming week.
The Queen marks the 70th anniversary of her reign on February 6th 2022 but is expected to keep the day quietly as it is also the anniversary of the death of her beloved father, King George VI. The main Platinum Jubilee celebrations take place at the start of June 2022.
