Ukraine’s President and First Lady meet royals in Sweden and Denmark

The Ukrainian Presidential Couple has paid visits to several European countries over the past couple of days to strengthen ties and support and spent two days with the Danish Royal Family.

President Zelenskyy and First Lady Zelenska arrived in Denmark on Sunday afternoon, marking their first official visit to the Scandinavian country.

The Danish Royal Family’s Instagram account stated that the Ukrainian visit “marks Danish support and backing for the Ukrainian defence with a focus on both the concrete military support and the long-term support for the country and its population.”

Crown Princess Mary greeted the couple upon arrival Sunday afternoon, alongside members of the Danish government.

After their initial meeting, Crown Princess Mary and First Lady Zelenska departed for Haderslev Cathedral for an evening service performed in Danish and Ukrainian.

The Danish Royal Court shared, “The local Ukrainians, together with the Danish congregation, were invited to church service and evensong to mark the close ties between the two countries and their populations.”

According to First Lady Zelenska, the service was held “in memory of the hundreds of [Ukrainian] children killed by Russian missiles. I am grateful to the Crown Princess and the entire Denmark for this gesture and daily help to our country and people.”

The First Lady also posted a video on X of the service and of the pair chatting with congregation members, captioning it: “Together with Crown Princess Mary, we spoke to [the Ukrainian] community of Haderslev. These people do not await victory but do everything to bring it closer. I keep repeating: every Ukrainian is important for their country. Only together can we make it the best country for our children.”

On Monday, Queen Margrethe and the Crown Prince Couple received President Zelenskyy and First Lady Zelenska at Christiansborg.

Queen Margrethe gifted the Ukrainian Presidential Couple with a painting she’d created in the 1990s called ‘The Tree of Life’ while at the reception. The Danish Royal House shared that Queen Margrethe “has on several occasions expressed her great support for the Ukrainian people.”

President Zelenskyy and First Lady Zelenska also presented Queen Margrethe with a painting.

Joining the Danish royals and the Ukrainian Presidential Couple for lunch were representatives from the Danish, Ukrainian, Greenlandic and Faroe Islands governments.

The Danish Royal Court revealed the menu for Monday’s official luncheon. The guests dined on roasted halibut with lobster, chanterelles and beurre blanc, and for dessert enjoyed coffee and cream buns, passion fruit mocca, and sipped on Rosé du Prince from the Chateau de Cayx, the summer residence of the Danish Royal Family.

First Lady Zelenska posted on X about the couple’s meeting and lunch with the Danish royals: “We are extremely grateful for Denmark’s understanding and active position in helping Ukraine to fight for people and life.”

Their visit to Denmark included an address to the Folketinget by President Zelenskyy.

President Zelenskyy posted: “Olena @ZelenskaUA and I met with HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and members of the Royal Family.

“We are thankful for the Royal Family’s support of all the important humanitarian efforts. We thank the Danish government, parliament, and all Danes for standing with Ukraine.”

Prior to their arrival in Denmark, President Zelenskyy and First Lady Zelenska were in Sweden and received by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia at Stenhammar Castle.

The Swedish Royal Court shared: “The King received in-depth information about the situation in the country directly from the president.

“In the conversation, the King expressed his support for the people of Ukraine.”

Queen Silvia, meanwhile, met with First Lady Zelenska to talk about how the ongoing conflict is affecting Ukrainian children.

First Lady Zelenska posted, “Had an honour to meet with the King of [Sweden] Carl XVI Gustaf and the Queen Silvia. I expressed my gratitude for the support of [Ukraine]. Our countries have not only common flag colors, but also common principles. The main one is that human life is priceless and its quality is a priority.”

The Ukrainian Presidential Couple were also in the Netherlands over the weekend, however, they did not meet with King Willem-Alexander or Queen Máxima while in the country.

President Zelenskyy posted on X on Monday evening that the couple had arrived in Greece for continued visits.
