Swedish royals issue health update after King Carl XVI Gustaf undergoes heart surgery

The Swedish Royal Household has confirmed that the planned heart surgery for King Carl XVI Gustaf has gone successfully

The King was operated on during the morning of February 20th 2023.

In a brief update, the Swedish court said that King Carl Gustaf underwent ”surgical procedure with catheter technology in the heart area.”

The operation went according to plan and the King is now recovering and doing well.

His Majesty expressed his thanks for the care he is receiving, with a statement adding that the king ”thanks for all the support and warmth shown to him, and feels grateful for Swedish healthcare.”

The king’s surgery was announced several weeks ago and his diary has been cleared until the first week of march to allow him to recuperate.

King Carl Gustaf, 76, has a busy year ahead of him. In the coming months, celebrations continue across Sweden for his Golden Jubilee. He will mark 50 years of rule in September 2023.
