Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel kick off Italian visit in Rome

The Kingdom of Sweden and Italy have a long diplomatic history, and this week, that relationship is further strengthened as Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel visit the Italian Republic on an official tour.

The Swedish Crown Princess Couple began their journey to Italy on Monday, 18 October, together with Anna Hallberg, Sweden’s Minister of Trade, and a sizeable Swedish business delegation.

This is the first official trip abroad by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel in over a year. Health and safety were still a priority, and the royals wore masks during parts of the visit. The first stop was at Italy’s Transport Administration before the couple saw an exhibition in Piazza San Silvestro, not far from the Trevi Fountain, focusing on Swedish values and Swedish commitment to gender equality.

The first day of the visit concluded with a large dinner with the Swedish Ambassador. A total of 70 guests were invited to a dinner where Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were the guests of honour of Ambassador Jan Bjorklund. The Ambassador has a background in Swedish politics and was for 12 years the leader of Sweden’s Liberal Party. In addition to the 40 participants from the Swedish delegation, Italian leaders from the business community and Italian politics also participated.

The official visit will see the Swedish royals visit Rome and Turin to make contacts and offer services in areas such as digitisation and green technology. Italy is currently making significant investments to restart the country after the pandemic.

On Tuesday, the program continued in Rome before the Swedish Crown Princess Couple travelled on to Turin on Tuesday evening.

Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel last visited Italy together during an official visit in 2016.

The ties between Italy and Sweden are strong, especially due to the Italian immigrants settling in Sweden after World War II. Additionally, an increasing number of Swedish charter tourists also travel to Italy, and since the late 1940s, many Swedish football players have been successful with Italian clubs.
