Spain’s royal sisters reunited for major event after an autumn of big changes

Leonroe, L

Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia of Spain have been reunited after both went their separate ways in an autumn of big changes.

Leonor, 20 and heir to the throne, has begun university in Madrid after completing three years of military training.

Sofia, 19 and second in line, has been settling into her new student home in Paris where she is continuing her studies after a year in Portugal.

The sisters, who are famously close, have now been reunited in Oviedo where they are joining forces for the prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards.

The prizes, which have been handed out for over 40 years, are given for achievement in a range of areas including arts, science and sports.

The celebration, which runs for three days, saw the sisters brought back together with their first appearance coming at the traditional concert which takes place in Oviedo on the eve of the prize giving.

Along with their parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, the princess and the infanta attended the celebration which this year focused on the work of Felix Mendelssohn.

Princess Leonor, in a black evening suit, and Infanta Sofia, in a midnight blue dress, seemed delighted to be back in one another’s company after weeks pursuing their own studies.

The day of the prize giving began with a number of audiences for those who have been chosen as recipients of the awards this year. For the first time, Princess Leonor led some of those without her parents.

Later, Queen Sofia joined her family in Oviedo where she took a seat in a balcony overlooking the main auditorium as King Felipe and Queen Letizia took their seats on the dais with Leonor and Sofia.

It’s a big month for Princess Leonor who has been heir to the throne for 12 years. On October 31, she will celebrate her 21st birthday.
