Queen Letizia at FEDEPE meeting

On Monday, Queen Letizia opened the joint conference for the World Blind Union (WBU) and the International Council for the Education of the Visually Impaired (ICEVI). The conference took place within the World Blindness Summit Madrid 2021.

Her Majesty arrived at the Sports and Culture Complex, belonging to the National Blind people Organization, and was greeted by the Presidents of the Congress and the Senate, the Minister of Inclusion and Social Security, the President of the Madrid Community and the Mayor of Madrid, as well as several officials from associations connected with the event.

Queen Letizia then moved to the auditorium, where she gave a speech, in which she remarked on the magnitude of the occasion and the sheer number of topics the forum will focus on.

The works will indeed dive deep into the issues that blind people face, from employment  and leisure activities to education, technologies and mobility.

The forums is the first of its kind, and it includes associations for blind people from all over the world, including Mexico, Argentina and Chile, but also Australia and Canada, as well as a big representation from developing countries, such as India, Afghanistan, South Sudan or Zimbabwe.

Her Majesty has long been involved with the Spanish association for Blind People, welcoming them for audiences at Zarzuela Palace for as long as she has been a member of the Royal Family.

This is included in her more ample work with people with disabilities of all kinds, and people with rare diseases; she even welcomed several official of associations for people with rare conditions and disabilities to the Royal Palace during the reception Their Majesties gave after King Felipe’s proclamation.

This is a busy week for Queen Letizia, who is set to travel to Catalonia on Thursday to support her daughter handing out the Princess of Girona awards.
