The King of Spain has held a series of meetings with politicians as news of the exile of his father, Juan Carlos, continues to dominate the country’s media. Felipe VI welcomed political leaders from the Balearic Islands to his home in Mallorca as his stay there got officially under way.
King Felipe held a series of audiences on August 10th at the Royal Palace of Almudaina in Palma de Mallorca.
Felipe VI met the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol then welcomed Vicenç Thomàs, President of the Parliament of the islands. Catalina Cladera, President of the Council of Mallorca, also met the Spanish king at the palace. Felipe VI went on to hold a video meeting with José Francisco Hila, Mayor of Palma.
King Felipe arrived in Mallorca at the weekend with Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia. The family is staying at the Marivent Palace on the island. Queen Sofia was already in residence at the Marivent with her sister, Princess Irene of Greece.
The Spanish Royal Family’s summer stay comes as the fallout continues from the decision of King Juan Carlos to leave the country he ruled for almost forty years. The former monarch announced he was going into exile on August 3rd, having already quit Spain. Investigations are under way into claims of financial misconduct by Juan Carlos who is alleged to have hidden money that came to him via a rail contract in Swiss bank accounts.
Since then, a poll for El Mundo newspaper has shown that two thirds of those asked believe he shouldn’t have gone.
