Princess Delphine denies she compared herself to Diana

Princess Delphine has blasted the media for taking her comments about the late Diana, Princess of Wales, out of context following an interview with the UK publication Tatler.

In the September issue of the magazine, Princess Delphine sat down to talk about her relationship with the Belgian Royal Family now that she has officially been recognised as a daughter of the former King Albert II.

In the article, Princess Delphine is quoted as saying about the Belgian press: “I’m looked upon as very authentic and generous with my charities… I think they compare me now to Princess Diana because they see me as a bit of a princess of the heart.”

The Belgian princess took to her Instagram account to respond, writing: “I will not accept this misquote that is going around in the press. I normally do not speak out about misquotes, but this is just wrong.

“It’s taken out of context. I would never compare myself to Princess Diana, who I greatly admire. We have very different stories. And I would certainly never call myself ‘A Princess of hearts’ as the press is now claiming.”

Princess Delphine also spoke about her family, revealing that now that she is legally recognised as Albert’s daughter, “It felt good. There was no doubt that he was my father. Being close to him, I felt it. It was like nothing had happened. It was really strange. He has a brilliant sense of humour. He’s a very easygoing guy and so interesting. He’s done a lot of travel. That’s why it’s all so sad.”

Princess Delphine fought an extensive legal battle to be recognised as her father’s daughter, and it wasn’t until 2020 that the court battle came to an end, with Albert providing a DNA sample that confirmed Delphine’s allegations.

She was quickly granted a title and style owed to her, though she did not become an official working member of the Belgian Royal Family. She has, however, joined the family for wider celebrations like National Day.
