Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s elder son remanded in custody after being accused of rape

The elder son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Marius Borg Høiby, is in police custody after being charged with two counts of rape.

Borg Hoiby, 27, has been remanded for one week. He was arrested on November 18th 2024, close to his home at Skaugum on an allegation of rape. During the investigation, police found evidence of another alleged assault.

On November 20th, a court hearing on whether he should remain in custody took place behind closed doors. Police wanted a two week detention as they said they were concerned about securing evidence. A judge granted custody of one week.

The 27 year old’s lawyer, Øyvind Bratlien, has stated that his client denies the charges.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has not yet released a statement on her eldest son’s legal issues. Marius Borg Hoiby is her son from a previous relationship.

His stepfather, Crown Prince Haakon, spoke about the case. His stepson was arrested soon after he left Norway for an official visit to Jamaica. He told reporters there that he missed his wife and wished he was with her. But his first comments were about the case and he said ”these are serious allegations Marius now faces, and we are of course thinking of all those affected.”
