Queen Beatrix Abdicates, Willem-Alexander Becomes King

The Queen of the Netherlands (Beatrix) today abdicated her throne and was succeeded by her eldest son, who is now His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, who is Queen Consort of the Netherlands.

A ceremony took place at 10am this morning where the three signed the instrument of abdication and Beatrix renounced the throne, assuming the title of Princess Beatrix.

The eldest daughter of the new King and Queen has become HRH The Princess of Orange.

In the afternoon, the new King and Queen and the rest of the Royal Family and other royal, imperial and princely families attended the investiture of Their Majesties where King Willem-Alexander swore an oath to uphold the Dutch constitution.

Representing the UK at the investiture were TRH The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

King Willem-Alexander is now the youngest Monarch in Europe.

Their Majesties will perform a tour of the Netherlands in the coming months.
