Guillaume at 40: causes close to his heart

Throughout adulthood, the Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg has shown his interest and support both in his country and worldwide.

Of course, as the heir to the Grand Duchy, his primary duties are the representation of Luxembourg. Since 2001, he has been the Honourary Chair of the Luxembourg Trade and Investment Board. The board manages the economic promotion of Luxembourg all over the world. In that role, the Hereditary Grand Duke has presented the Luxembourg American Investment Award many times since 2004. His wife, the Hereditary Grand Duchess, often attends the ceremony with him.

In addition to roles abroad, Guillaume supports many causes and organisations within Luxembourg. He routinely attends ceremonies and bestows awards on behalf of the Chamber of Trades and the Chamber of Commerce. He also supports the housing market by supporting the Home and Living Expo every year.

Guillaume has participated in scouting from a young age. As a part of his scouting activities, he visited Nepal in a humanitarian capacity in 1997. The visit left such an impression on the Hereditary Grand Duke that he has supported reforestation activities and other humanitarian work supporting less privileged communities in Nepal. In addition to his work in Nepal, Guillaume supports scouting by joining the Board of Directors of the World Scout Foundation and taking over the title of scout leader after the death of Grand Duke Jean.

One keen interest the Hereditary Grand Duke has is supporting people living with disabilities in Luxembourg. From 2000-2011, he chaired the board of the Kräizbierg Foundation, which helps people living with disabilities. In recognition of his decade-plus of service, he was appointed Honourary President of the foundation in 2011. He has also been the patron of Special Olympics Luxembourg since 2017. Guillaume, often with his wife Stephanie, has attended many events supporting the Kräizbierg Foundation as well as Special Olympics events.

Another interest close to Guillaume’s heart is the support of young people. Because of that, he has attended several events supporting the European Meeting of Luxembourg Students. In addition, he has been the patron of Central Youth Hostels since 2001 and Young Scientists Foundation Luxembourg since 2020.

Guillaume also has a particular interest in supporting entrepreneurship. He has been the patron of Young Entrepreneurs Luxembourg since 2013 and the Federation of Young Business Leaders of Luxembourg since 2017. Like Queen Maxima of The Netherlands, Guillaume supports microfinance, social business, and other business tools used to fight poverty. In support of that interest, he has participated in several of the Global Grameen Meetings.

Personally, Guillaume has a love of classical music and sports. Bringing those interests into his royal work, the Hereditary Grand Duke is patron of the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra, the European Union Youth Harmony Orchestra, and the Luxembourg Cycling Sports Federation.

In his decades of public service, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume has shown his support and been the patron of a variety of causes, many in Luxembourg but also global initiatives. These causes reflect his variety of interests and his commitment to promoting Luxembourg abroad.
