A royal baby for Luxembourg: Guillaume and Stephanie are expecting their first child

The Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg are to become parents. The heir to the throne, Prince Guillaume, and his wife, Princess Stephanie, have just announced they are expecting their first baby.

The happy news was confirmed by the Marshall of the Court in a short statement released on the morning of December 6th 2019. It read:

Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke and Duchess are immensely pleased to announce that the Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess are expecting Their first child. The birth is scheduled for May. The Grand Duke, the Grand Duchess and the members of both families are delighted with the news and share their great joy”.

The royals also released new official portraits of the couple to mark the occasion.

Stephanie and Guillaume’s baby will be second in line to the throne of Luxembourg from birth and is expected to one day succeed as Grand Duke or Duchess. The announcement comes just days after Luxembourg’s royals gathered to mark the centenary of the accession of Grand Duchess Charlotte, grandmother to the present Grand Duke, Henri.

Guillaume, 38, and Stephanie, 35, married in October 2012 in a wedding attended by royals from around the world. News of their expected arrival is a happy ending to the year for the family after the passing in April of the much loved Grand Duke Jean who ruled from 1964 to 2000. And as Luxembourg prepares to welcome a future ruler, his name must be top of the list for a future prince.
