Grand Duchess Maria Teresa cancels official events for the coming week

The Grand Ducal Court of Luxembourg has announced in a press release that Maria Teresa, the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, has been forced to cancel all official events after her younger brother Luis Mestre was admitted to the intensive care. The press release does not state the reason for his admittance to the intensive care unit. Maria Teresa will take the week off to be with her family.

The Grand Duchess is one of four siblings – she has two brothers (one is already deceased) and a sister. She was born in Havana, Cuba, before the family moved to New York. She met her future husband at university and their engagement was announced in 1980 at the end of their studies. They married the following year and since her husband’s accession in 2000, she has been the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. She and her husband have five children and four grandchildren – and one more on the way.

Her bio on her official website states, “A woman of heart and conviction, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa puts the protection of the most vulnerable and the defence of women’s and young girls’ rights against all forms of violence at the heart of her social and humanitarian action.”
