King Frederik X of Denmark will give his first New Year’s Eve address as monarch after his mother abdicated in January 2024. Where will he be giving his address from?
The Danish court has shared that King Frederik will be giving his speech from the King’s Reception Room at Frederik VII’s Palace at Amalienborg.
The King’s Reception Room features murals inspired by Denmark, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland from Danish artist Jesper Christiansen.
King Frederik’s first New Year’s address as monarch will be broadcast at 18:00 on television, and radio, and as well on social media.
While many monarchs give an annual Christmas Eve or Christmas Day speech, historically the Danish monarch gives their address on New Year’s Eve. The tradition first began in 1941 when King Christian X gave a New Year’s Eve address transmitted over radio. In 1958, King Frederik IX’s address was broadcast over television.
Amalienborg is the official residence of the Danish monarch and their family. It is made up of four individual palaces: Christian VII’s Palace, Christian VIII’s Palace, Frederik VII’s Palace, and Christian IX’s Palace.
King Frederik and Queen Mary live at Frederik VII’s Palace along with their four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine.
