The royal children who left Denmark as Princes & Princesses, but returned a few days later as Counts & Countesses

Prince Joachim of Denmark at Christmas 2020

It was a different Christmas to usual for the Danish Royal Family in 2022. Queen Margrethe celebrated the festivities for the first time at Djursland alongside her sister, Princess Benedikte. Meanwhile, the Crown Prince & Princess and their children spent Christmas in Australia with Crown Princess Mary’s family.

Until this week, however, it was not known where Prince Joachim and his family celebrated the holidays. Danish media are now reporting that the Prince and his family are travelling back to Denmark after spending Christmas in Vietnam.

Prince Joachim travelled to the South Asian country with his wife, Princess Marie, and their four children – Count Nikolai, Count Felix, Count Henrik, and Countess Athena, to Vietnam.

Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena left Denmark in 2022 as Prince and Princesses, but returned as Counts and Countesses.

In September 2022, Queen Margrethe made the shock announcement that she wished to remove their titles in order for them to have greater freedom without royalty restricting their careers and lives.

The decision was met with great controversy, with Joachim and Marie speaking out in interviews condemning the move. Queen Margrethe issued an apology shortly thereafter for any hurt feelings but did not reverse her decision.

Prince Joachim and his family were always due to travel to Vietnam. The trip was supposed to take place in 2020, but had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. The same thing happened the following year. But now the princely family have finally managed to get away, and here Joachim finally got the opportunity to show the children the country where their grandfather, Prince Henrik, spent many of his childhood years.

Prince Joachim’s has as a patron of CARE Denmark visited several projects in Southeast Asia many times, including Vietnam.

It has not been long since Vietnam had a visit from the Danish royal family. In November of last year, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary visited the country, together with a large business delegation from Denmark.
