The queen who suggested the idea behind Netflix’s latest release

We’re used to seeing royalty attend big film premieres. What is far more unusual, however, is that the film is the result of an idea from a reigning queen. This was the case, however, at the premiere of a brand new movie for Netflix which was released on the platform just days ago.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark was on the guest list for the premiere of the film ‘Against The Ice’ at Dagmar Cinema in Copenhagen and had it not been for the Crown Prince’s mother, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, this movie might not exist.

Danish director Peter Flinth got the idea for his latest film from none other than Queen Margrethe herslef. She tipped him off when they worked together on the film “The Wild Swan”. The director shared the surprising news himself with Danish press during the premiere on February 27th 2022.

Queen Margrethe provided the costumes and scenography for “The Wild Swan”, a film that was released in 2009. At the time, she spoke to the Danish director Flinth about Greenland, among other things, and asked him if he had read the book “Two Against The Ice” by Ejnar Mikkelsen.

Director Flinth, said at the premiere: “I did not have that book, to which she said that it was a recommendation and that it could be an excellent film. And I have to say she was right”.

Against The Ice is a true story about a Danish polar expedition in 1909 led by Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen. The mission was to disprove the United States’ claim to North-Eastern Greenland, a claim that was rooted in the idea that Greenland was broken up into two different pieces of land. Leaving their crew behind with the ship, Mikkelsen and a rookie colleague sled across the ice. The main roles are played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known from Game of Thrones, and Joe Cole, known form Peaky Blinders.

Queen Margrethe is well known for her passion for the arts, theatre and cinema.
