Sealed with a kiss: the crowning moment of a day of history for King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark

The King and Queen of Denmark sealed the start of a new reign with a lingering kiss during a balcony appearance.

King Frederik and Queen Mary were greeted with huge cheers as they kissed just minutes after the proclamation of the new reign.

The couple had held hands and hugged as they appeared before tens of thousands waiting for them at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen.

Less than an hour earlier, Queen Margrethe had abdicated in front of a Council of State.

Her Majesty was overcome with emotion as she said ‘God Save the King’ to the ministers who witnessed this moment of history.

Queen Margrethe then returned to Amalienborg while King Frederik stepped on to the balcony to be proclaimed to the people of Denmark by the country’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen.

He gave a short speech in which he praised his mother’s exemplary reign and revealed his new motto before he was joined by his wife.

Loud cheers came as Queen Mary greeted the crowds. The couple turned to one another and held both hands before they were joined by their children.

Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine spent several minutes waving to the crowds before heading back inside.

But it was the decision of the new king and queen to kiss that really thrilled those waiting in the chilly temperatures.

It sealed a special afternoon when Denmark celebrated the start of the reign of King Frederik X.
