Queen Margrethe joins family for first Christmas celebrations since abdication

Queen Margrethe has reunited with her family ahead of Christmas Day and also joining the party is her grandson who spent the autumn on another continent. This is Margrethe’s first Christmas since she announced her abdication in her 2023 New Year’s Eve address.

The Danish Royal Family shared photos of the family reunion at Marselisborg Castle, the royal residence in Aarhus.

Queen Margrethe arrived at Marselisborg on 20 December and has been joined by King Frederik, Queen Mary, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Prince Josephine.

Crown Prince Christian has also joined his family after spending three months in East Africa, where he learned first-hand about the running of farms.

The Danish Royal Family began spending the Christmas holidays at Marselisborg Castle in 1972 when Queen Margrethe ascended the throne.

Queen Margrethe will be spending several more days at the residence in Aarhus, remaining there until 30 December.

King Frederik and Queen Mary will be staying until 26 December. King Frederik will give his first New Year’s Eve address as monarch and will then host the traditional New Year’s levees in January.

Margrethe’s younger son, Prince Joachim, will not be spending Christmas in Denmark. He and his wife, Princess Marie, and their children, will be spending the holidays with Marie’s family in France.
