Prince Joachim talks about freedom in new interview

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie

Prince Joachim, younger son of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, has revealed how his life has changed since he moved to Paris with his family.

Joachim has been speaking to the Danish newspaper “Berlingske” which published an exclusive interview with the prince that opens up about life as a Danish prince in France.

Prince Joachim says, among other things, that he himself has been able to define the role he has in the Danish royal house, and that this role has taken on a new dimension in connection with now having a job as Defence Attaché with an office at the Danish Embassy in France.

The prince, younger brother of Crown Prince Frederik, is satisfied with his work as Defence Attaché, and he has a certain freedom to choose his very own path also in the future.

His Royal Highness says: “Between me and my brother it is more complicated. The Crown Prince must simply follow the course of events, but nowhere is it defined what is expected of number two and his wife, neither in writing nor in speech. I have far greater freedom than the Crown Prince to do what I want”.

Prince Joachim continues: “Most of us, no matter what our fate will be, can do more or less what we want in our part of the world. We do not have to do as our parents did. It creates a freedom of movement in our lives. Nevertheless, if you are from a royal family, your life is a little more structured. Now I have a new dimension in my royal work, I have been sent on a mission here to France. My mission here in Paris extends over three years, when it is over there is something new waiting behind the horizon that I do not know yet”.

Prince Joachim says in the interview that he has told his children that they are free to do exactly what they want as long as they behave properly. Prince Joachim does not have the same freedom because he gets apanage from the Danish government.
