Portraits of a king and queen crown week of royal history

The first official portraits of Denmark’s new king and queen have been released as the first week of a new reign comes to a close.

King Frederik X and Queen Mary were photographed in the Throne Room at Christiansborg Palace just moments after His Majesty was proclaimed to Denmark from a nearby balcony.

The couple pose in front of the thrones they have just taken in a series of images that are now part of history.

Dennis Stenild was tasked with capturing this important moment for posterity.

His trio of images also include portraits of the King and Queen of Denmark with their eldest child, Crown Prince Christian.

Another photo shows King Frederik and Queen Mary with all four of their children as Princess Isabella, now second in line to the throne, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine join the family portrait.

The images have been shared as a week of history draws to a close in Denmark. Queen Margrethe II abdicated on the afternoon of January 14th 2024, the 52nd anniversary of her reign and was succeeded immediately by King Frederik.

Hundreds of thousands of people crowded around Christiansborg Palace to see the new king proclaimed by Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, before cheering the monarch and his consort in a balcony appearance that ended with a kiss.

Celebrations continued as huge crowds enjoyed a carriage procession taking King Frederik and Queen Mary back to Amalienborg Palace where they again appeared to cheering crowds.
