King Frederik is making an unexpected visit to Greenland as the very public overtures towards it from the US President, Donald Trump, continue.
Almost as soon as he started another high profile visit to Japan, Denmark’s king announced that he’ll be heading to Greenland imminently with some big meetings on the agenda.
Greenland is part of the Danish realm and King Frederik gave it increased prominence in his coat of arms which was designed after he took the throne in 2024 but was only revealed recently.
King Frederik’s trip will include a meeting with Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the Prime Minister of Greenland.
The Danish king first will visit Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, where he will meet the newly elected government.
Along with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Denmark, Troels Lund Poulsen, His Majesty will also visit Station Nord, the northernmost military and scientific station in Greenland.
He will finish his trip to Greenland by visiting the SIRIUS Dog Sled Patrol. The patrol is a naval unit and helps to protect Danish sovereignty in the Arctic, largely through long-range reconnaissance patrolling.
This is King Frederik’s second visit to Greenland following his accession to the throne in January 2024; he first visited in the summer of 2024.
His visit comes on the heels of Donald Trump’s overtures towards Greenland. The American President sent the Vice-President, JD Vance, to Greenland at the end of March to drum up support for the United States acquiring Greenland.
