Frederik of Denmark, born to be king

Denmark will start the New Year with a new monarch. Margrethe II will abdicate on January 14th 2024 and the throne will pass to her elder son who will become Frederik X.

He will be the first King of Denmark in over fifty years.

Frederik Andre Henrik Christian was born on May 26th 1968 in Copenhagen, the first child of Margrethe and her husband, Prince Henrik. He became heir to the throne of Denmark at the age of three when his mother succeeded as queen in January 1972. He was educated in Denmark, France and the United States.

He spent a year working at the Danish Embassy in Paris and trained with all three of Denmark’s armed forces.

He married Mary Donaldson in 2004 and the couple have four children. His wife will be the first Australian born consort of Denmark.

Their elder son will become heir to the throne and becomes Crown Prince Christian.
