King Frederik and Queen Mary keep Christmas tradition in first year of reign

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark have shared their festive plans as they approach the first Christmas of the new reign.

The Danish king and queen will follow the family’s tradition and spend the holiday period at Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus.

King Frederik and Queen Mary will be joined by all four of their children for Christmas: Crown Prince Christian (19), Princess Isabella (17), Prince Vincent (13), and Princess Josephine (13).

Queen Margrethe will also be joining her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren at Marselisborg. She will be staying there from 20 December to 30 December.

King Frederik and his family will officially be in residence in Aarhus from 23 December to 26 December. Visitors will be able to see the Changing of the Guard ceremony during this period.

The Danish will be making one very important debut for his reign during the holiday season, as well. On 31 December, he will make his first New Year’s address from Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen at 18:00.

The Danish monarch makes a New Year address rather than a Christmas address. In her 2024 New Year address, Queen Margrethe announced her abdication.

While Margrethe will be joining Frederik and Mary’s family, another family member will be absent.

Prince Joachim will be absent from Marselisborg. He and Princess Marie, and their children, will spend the holiday season with Marie’s family.
