Denmark’s new king attends parliamentary reception on first full day of reign

The King and Queen of Denmark have attended a reception at the country’s parliament as a brand new reign gets under way.

On a snowy morning in Copenhagen, King Frederik X and Queen Mary arrived at the parliament where Queen Margrethe was waiting to greet them.

Their Majesties were welcomed by dignitaries as well as family members on this first official event of the reign of Frederik X.

Shouts of ‘hurrah’ came from a small crowd as they arrived.

Queen Margrethe, dressed in grey, stood in the falling snow to welcome her son and successor. Her sister, Princess Benedikte, was at her side. And the former monarch couldn’t contain her pride as the new king made his entrance at parliament.

There were hugs and kisses for both from King Frederik, Queen Mary and their son, Crown Prince Christian.

But the biggest hug was between the new monarch and his younger brother. Prince Joachim had attended the events around the abdication of his mother and the accession of his brother on January 14th 2024 but hadn’t been seen publicly, with just a brief glimpse in the video of the day shared by the Danish royal family.

However, he was waiting for Frederik X on the steps of the parliament buildings and the brothers threw their arms around each other for a warm hug.

The parliamentary reception comes on the first full day of the reign of Frederik X.

He took the throne on the abdication of his mother, becoming king the moment that Margrethe II signed a declaration at a Council of State.

Huge crowds cheered the new king and queen following Frederik X’s official proclamation from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.

Another massive crowd was waiting for the Danish royal family on their arrival home at Amalienborg Palace where they made another balcony appearance with their children – Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16 and 13 year old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
