The British government has issued a ‘profound apology’ to Crown Princess Mary after her invitation to attend the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II was recinded.
In a statement on Tuesday 13th September, the Danish Royal Household announced that Queen Margrethe would be attending the funeral at Westminster Abbey alongside her son, Crown Prince Frederik, and his wife, Crown Princess Mary.
However, the Crown Princess was ‘uninvited’ to the funeral after the Foreign Office realised that they had invited Her Royal Highness in error.
Shortly before the funeral took place, a Danish royal spokesperson said: “There has been a regrettable error in the invitation from the British Foreign Office’s protocol. It is thus only the Queen and the Crown Prince who, from the Danish side, will participate in Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral on Monday.”
A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has passed on their profound apologies to the Danish Royal Household through the Danish Embassy.”
It appears that the mistake occurred after Queen Margrethe chose to bring the Crown Prince as her guest. An invitation was then sent in error to the Crown Prince allowing him to also bring a guest.
On Wednesday 21st September, two days after the funeral, the Danish Royal Household announced that Queen Margrethe had tested positive for Covid 19.
Her Majesty is recovering at Fredensborg Castle and has cancelled her upcoming engagements for the week.
