Queen Margrethe of Denmark tests positive for Covid after returning from Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has tested positive for Covid-19 after returning to Fredensborg from the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London.

Margrethe, who is the last reigning Queen in Europe, has cancelled all of her activities for the remainder of the week while she recovers.

A royal spokesperson says the 82-year-old is staying at the Danish Royal Family’s autumn residence – Fredensborg Castle.

Her Majesty was due to host a reception at Christiansborg Castle on Friday for members of the Danish government and the European Parliament. This event will go ahead, but with Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary as hosts.

The Danish Crown Prince also attended the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth earlier this week – an event that was attended by over 500 foreign heads of state and overseas dignitaries.

Queen Margrethe marked 50 years on the throne last week, however, her Golden Jubilee celebrations were heavily scaled back due to the death of her cousin anf close friend, Queen Elizabeth.

Her Majesty ordered that flags at the palaces at Amalienborg be flown at half-mast.

Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee celebrations were due to take place in January, but a surge in COVID cases led to the delay of the events.
