Emperor Naruhito of Japan, who ascended the throne on 1 May 2019 after the abdication of his father Emperor Emeritus Akihito the previous day, celebrates his 60th birthday today.

Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, public celebrations of his birthday were cancelled, but private celebrations with the Imperial Family and Japanese government will still take place.
