First details of abdication of Margrethe II revealed

Queen Margrethe of Denmark on her 81st birthday

The first details of how the reign of Queen Margrethe II will end have been revealed.

The Queen of Denmark announced she will abdicate during her New Year’s Eve speech and confirmed she will step aside on January 14th 2024, the 52nd anniversary of her accession.

She will be succeeded immediately by her elder son who will become Frederik X of Denmark.

Now, the Danish government has said that a Council of State will take place on January 14th 2024 after which the Prime Minister will declare the change of reign from Christiansborg Palace.

It has also been confirmed that, following her abdication, Margrethe will continue to be titled as ‘Her Majesty’.
