Buckingham Palace has privately expressed concern with Downing Street that The Queen is inadvertently being dragged into the Donald Trump State Visit controversy.
According to The Times, the Palace are unhappy that Her Majesty has been put into a politically explosive situation following the heavy controversy that has arisen.
The news comes after Downing Street sais that the Prime Minister didn’t invite Donald Trump on a State Visit, but senior Buckingham Palace officials did so.
The invitation was suggested by the Foreign Office Committee, of which the Private Secretaries to The Queen, Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge take part in.
Despite the claims by Number 10, as a Constitutional Monarch, only the Prime Minister can approve an invitation for a State Visit to take place in Her Majesty’s name.
After Number 10 tried to shift the blame to the Palace, Whitehall sources said that senior members of the government officials were also on the committee.
Speaking to The Times, former head of the Foreign Office, Lord Rickets, said that The Queen is in a “very difficult position” and that the State Visit should be cancelled to avoid dragging Her Majesty further into the saga.
The former Permanent Secretary said: “It would have been far wiser to wait to see what sort of President he would turn out to be before advising The Queen to invite him. Now The Queen is put in a very difficult position.”
The controversy over the upcoming State Visit stems from an executive order that the President signed, banning people from certain countries entering the United States.
Almost two million Britons have signed a petition demanding that the government cancels a planned State Visit to the UK by President Donald Trump.
The petition, demands that the State Visit should be cancelled to prevent any embarrassment to The Queen.
An emergency debate was held in the House of Commons on Monday regarding the travel bans.
The Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has said that he is not happy for President Trump’s State Visit to go ahead while the controversial bans preventing people from entering the USA based on their country of origin are in place.
Speaking to Robert Peston, Mr Corbyn said: “I’m not happy with him coming here until that ban is lifted, quite honestly.”
He added: “It’s slightly odd he should be invited so quickly, particularly in view of the statements he’s made, and I suspect this visit is something that might find its way into the long grass.”
He also said that Buckingham Palace should “absolutely not rush” in making arrangements for the visit, which is expected to take place later this year.
There is no need for a so-called “row”, if Britain doesn’t want a trade deal with the U.S. just let Trump know. End of row.
