Australian crowd breaks into cheers as King Charles is honoured at Melbourne Cup

The King received an unexpected honour at the Melbourne Cup after being recognised during the trophy presentation following Point Of Law’s extraordinary victory.

King Charles was named the recipient of the breeders’ award during the celebrations at Flemington, prompting cheers from the Australian crowd as the announcement was made.

Master of Ceremonies Eddie McGuire addressed the spectators, saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, the breeders’ award today goes to King Charles III.”

The announcement was greeted with a cheer from the Melbourne crowd, providing another memorable royal moment at one of Australia’s biggest sporting occasions.

McGuire then revealed the prize awaiting His Majesty.

“He will receive an English leather head collar with engraved gold-plated plaque to wear with pride,” he announced.

A royal celebration at Flemington

The presentation came after Point Of Law produced a sensational performance to win the 2026 Melbourne Cup.

The three-year-old son of Frankel, who was bred by The King before being sold to Australian connections, swept to victory under jockey Ethan Brown for trainer Ciaron Maher.

His success was particularly remarkable given the circumstances surrounding his sale earlier this year.

The King had reportedly received well in excess of £3 million for the horse following lengthy negotiations with the Australian connections.

However, Point Of Law has now delivered the ultimate prize for his new owners, winning Australia’s most famous race in emphatic fashion.

The King’s breeding achievement recognised

The breeders’ award provided a special acknowledgement of The King’s role in producing the Melbourne Cup winner.

Although His Majesty no longer owns Point Of Law, his success at Flemington represents a significant achievement for the breeding operation behind the horse.

The announcement also offered a reminder of the Royal Family’s longstanding connection with thoroughbred racing.

The late Queen Elizabeth II was one of Britain’s most passionate royal racehorse owners and breeders, and The King has continued that interest.

While the Melbourne Cup victory belonged to Point Of Law’s new connections, the award ensured that His Majesty received recognition for his part in the horse’s journey.
