King Frederik finds himself barred from his seat in Denmark’s parliament and laughs it off with Queen Mary

King Frederik of Denmark

King Frederik of Denmark found himself barred from his seat as he headed to his country’s parliament.

The King of Denmark was at parliament for its official opening for this year. He was accompanied by his wife, Queen Mary, and his aunt, Princess Benedikte.

However, as all three entered the balcony, where Denmark’s royals traditionally sit for the opening, Frederik X found he was blocked from his seat.

The red rope which stopped anyone accessing the seats was still in place. King Frederik initially tried walking down the side to try and get to the space saved for him but found it was impossible and so returned to the entrance. There, he and Queen Mary carefully removed the rope and all three royals made their way to their seats.

The Danish royal family has watched the proceedings of parliament from a special balcony since 1988 – until then, they sat among the politicians for big events such as official openings.

They listened to the opening speech from Danish PM, Mette Frederiksen.

The Danish parliament meets in a chamber at Christiansborg and the building was decked with the country’s flag for the event.

Queen Mary chose a deep red skirt suit for the event and added a vintage Dior brooch featuring turquoises that she first wore in Paris.

The Danish parliament is traditionally opened on the first Tuesday of October every year.
