Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway to undergo lung transplant ‘as soon as possible’ as health worsens

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Noray

The Crown Princess of Norway will undergo a lung transplant ”as soon as possible” as her health continues to worsen.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been placed on the list of patients identified as needing a transplant imminently.

Preparations will begin for her to have the surgery which could take place within months.

Mette-Marit, 52, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018. In late 2025, doctors said she would need a lung transplant at some time in the future.

Now, Norway’s royals have confirmed that ”the development of the Crown Princess’s lung disease is serious” and she is on the list for a lung transpant.

In the same statement, the royal court added that Mette-Marit can now no longer carry out royal engagements and she won’t be taking on any more duties until her health improves.

The royals also said this would have consequences for the diary of her husband, Crown Prince Haakon.

The heir to the throne is now going to limit his activities as he supports his wife in preparation of her surgery. He won’t now travel to Sweden on June 19 for the celebrations marking the golden wedding anniversary of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Norway’s royals also said there would be no official events to mark the silver wedding anniversary of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit who will have been married for 25 years this August.

Earlier this week, Mette-Marit and Haakon’s daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, returned early from her university studies in Sydney, Australia to be closer to her mother.

It’s now been confirmed that Ingrid, second in line to the throne, will postpone her return to Australia. In the upcoming autumn term, she will be on exchange from Sydney to Oslo so that she can be close to her mother.

Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit have a son together. Prince Sverre Magnus, 20, is due to study in Europe as he furthers his education and the court has announced he will continue with those plans and return to Oslo when needed as his mother’s health remains paramount.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit has a son from a previous relationship. Marius Borg Hoiby is currently in custody as he is on trial for a number of offences, including rape, which he denies.

Last week, King Harald, 89, spoke of how seriously ill his daughter in law remains. It came as his wife, Queen Sonja, was taken to hospital for heart problems.
