Buckingham Palace is in talks with US officials about the agenda for the US State Visit of King Charles after shots were fired at a dinner attended by President Donald Trump.

The King is said to have ‘reached out’ to the President following the shooting at the Correspondents Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

Mr Trump along with Vice President, JD Vance, was rushed from the top table at the gala after shots were fired.

A gunman came within 100 yards of President Trump at the prestigious event before being tackled to the ground by security agents.

Security is now under review after the attempted attack which is believed to have been aimed at Trump administration officials.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace said ”a number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with US colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the visit.”

The King is being kept fully informed of the situation.

The suspect in the shooting has been named as Cole Tomas Allen. He is reported to have given a small donation ($25) to the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris in 2024 but has no other known political affiliations.

King Charles along with Queen Camilla is set to travel to the US on April 27 for a three day State Visit, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The King is to address Congress during the visit and will also be guest of honour at a State Dinner at the White House. The agenda also takes in New York.

It will be the first State Visit to the US made by King Charles. The last by a British Monarch was in 2007 when Queen Elizabeth II was hosted by George W Bush.

Donald Trump made a State Visit to the UK in September 2025, an historic second such trip after being welcomed on his first State Visit to the UK during his first term in office by Queen Elizabeth II.
