Queen Sofia of Spain looks at a paper being shown to her during a conference in Washington D.C.

Queen Sofia of Spain has visited the United States for a special event marking two and a half centuries of history between Spain and the US.

While King Felipe and Queen Letizia were in Egypt for a State Visit (complete with a visit to the pyramids), Queen Sofia attended the America&Spain250 Symposium in Washington D.C.

The conference explored the relationship between the US and Spain over the last 250 years, including Spain’s role and contribution during the American Revolution in 1775 and beyond, and the founding of the US.

In addition to the attending lectures and panels, Queen Sofia was also able to see several Spanish and American artefacts.

Before attending the symposium on 19 and 20 September, Sofia was able to attend a reception at the Spanish Embassy in DC.

Queen Sofia also hosted a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute at the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters. The QSSI was founded in 1954 and strives to encourage ‘American interest in the art, culture, customs, language, literature and history of Spain and Spanish-speaking world’.

After the meeting, Queen Sofia was given a tour of the DAR headquarters.
