Queen Mary has to retreat indoors after a shock on royal engagement

Queen Mary of Denmark is greeted by a young girl wearing a paper crown as she does a walkabout in Grasten

Queen Mary of Denmark had to briefly retreat indoors after a shock while out and about on a royal engagement.

The Danish queen was greeting crowds as she and her family arrived in Grasten when she suddenly grabbed her leg,

Her family, including husband King Frederik, quickly gathered round her as she appeared to bend over in some paint.

Mary then went inside Grasten town hall but reappeared very soon again afterwards.

It’s believed that Queen Mary had been stung by a wasp on her leg, causing the quick movement and reaction.

She was soon back to normal and greeting many of the crowds who had come out to meet her.

King Frederik and Queen Mary arrived in Grasten for their summer residence there. The Danish royal family traditionally spends several weeks at the pretty castle which has emotional ties for them. It was given to King Frederik’s grandfather, Frederik IX, as a wedding present when he married Ingrid of Sweden.

Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe, recently holidayed there with her two sisters, Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. The three daughters of Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid treasure the time they get to spend at the romantic castle which has such special links with their late parents.

Queen Mary joined by family

With King Frederik and Queen Mary were two of their children. Princess Isabella, who turned 18 earlier this year, looked confident and happy as she greeted wellwishers.

Also with the family was Isabella’s younger brother, Prince Vincent. The fourteen year old had no qualms about his royal walkabout and happily posed for a selfie as he said his hellos.

The Danish royals arrived at Grasten town hall for a welcome ceremony which saw King Frederik give a short speech. It was during this part of their time in Grasten that Queen Mary suffered the shock that led to her going inside the town hall.

The Danish queen was wearing a long floral skirt with a beige belted jacket at the time. She was also holding a large posy of summer flowers which might well have attracted the wasp’s attention.

Following the incident, the royals continued on their walkabout, strolling just under a mile from the town centre to the castle.

Their stay will last several weeks and will see Grasten transformed. As a result of the royal residency, the Royal Life Guard will march through the town every day just before noon.

Private holiday for Queen Mary

Queen Mary and King Frederik have enjoyed private holidays earlier this summer. Their elder son, Crown Prince Christian, has been regent several times during the past weeks as his parents take time for some vacations.

Christian, 19, wasn’t with his parents for the start of their time at Grasten. The heir to the throne is in the middle of his own military training at the moment.

The youngest member of the family also missed the day out in Grasten. Prince Vincent’s twin sister, Princess Josephine, wasn’t on the walkabout which took place under blue skies and in warm sunshine.

The royals will enjoy a break at their summer home before their autumn agenda gets under way. King Frederik and Queen Mar’s official engagements usually start in mid August, a little earlier than other European royal families.
