The first ever UK commemorative coin in honour of the Princess Royal has been revealed.

The Royal Mint is issuing a special one off coin to mark the 75th birthday of the Princess this summer.

Princess Anne personally approved the design of the coin which shows her in formal dress, wearing a tiara and smiling.

The image was created by Royal Mint coin designer Thomas T. Docherty who has been responsible for other notable royal pieces including commemorative money marking the 40th birthday of the Prince of Wales and the 40th birthday of King Charles.

This image of Anne is based on a portrait taken by John Swannell, a fellow of the Royal Photographic Society.

Around the image of the Princess are the words “The Princess Royal – Celebrating 75 Years – Duty and Devotion”.

On the other side, as you would expect of any British coin, is an image of her brother, The King.

The coin was released on July 18, almost a month before Princess Anne turns 75. Her birthday is on August 15.

Designer Thomas T. Docherty said ”In designing this piece, I wanted to capture Her Royal Highness’s remarkable legacy and dedication to public service. The portrait reflects her strength of character and unwavering commitment to duty. Being Scottish, I admire The Princess Royal’s dedication to Scottish organisations and communities, and I hope this coin serves as a fitting tribute.”

The Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin, Rebecca Morgan, said ”For the first time in British numismatic history, we are honoured to celebrate The Princess Royal on an official UK coin. Her Royal Highness’s unwavering commitment to public service, charitable work, and support of His Majesty’s Armed Forces over seven and a half decades makes her truly deserving of this tribute. The graceful design by Thomas Docherty perfectly captures both her dignified presence and extraordinary legacy while also celebrating The Princess Royal’s 75th birthday.”

The coin is available to buy on the Royal Mint’s website with prices starting at £17.50 for the commemorative piece.
