The Queen of Denmark is recovering in hospital after undergoing a planned operation on her back.
The surgery was described as ”extensive” in the brief update issued by the Danish Royal Household.
Queen Margrethe is now resting and is expected to stay in hospital for several days before continuing her recuperation at home.
In a statement, the Royal Household said ”the operation went according to plan and the Queen’s condition is good and stable, under the circumstances.”
No further details of the surgery were given. Queen Margrethe has experienced back problems for some time and has often been seated during official receptions while other members of her family remain standing.
The operation took place at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen on February 22nd 2023. The Royal Household announced the plans for surgery earlier this month.
Crown Prince Frederik is currently acting as regent of Denmark and will remain in that post until February 25th 2023 when he heads to India for a planned official visit. Queen Margrethe’s sister, Princess Benedikte, will become regent on his departure.
No date has been given for Queen Margrethe’s return to public duties.
