If anyone welcoming a baby boy this Jubilee year is looking for a name then the answer might just lie in two of the cities created to mark this special occasion. Stanley in the Falkland Islands and Douglas on the Isle of Man have just made history by winning the civic honours.
For the first time ever, the contest for city status was open to Crown Dependencies with Douglas becoming the first to win the honour. It was also widened to Overseas Territories and Stanley is the first of those to be made a city in a Jubilee contest.
The two new cities are among eight created for the Platinum Jubilee. Three of the others – Colchester, Doncaster and Milton Keynes – are in England while Dunfermline in Scotland is also honoured. In Wales, Wrexham becomes a city while Bangor in Northern Ireland is also elevated.
City status competitions have been run for each of The Queen’s four Jubilees. The 2022 contest has led to a record number of honours being bestowed.
Southampton also has cause to celebrate. It wont the race to become a Lord Mayoralty. From now on, its leading citizen will be known as Lord Mayor.
