A ‘tree of trees’ will be placed in front of Buckingham Palace as a central point of the Jubilee celebrations.
The sculpture, measuring 21 metres, will include 350 native British trees. The artwork, designed by Thomas Heatherwick, will ensure that trees and the environment are at the heart of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee festivities.
It’s another part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project which has seen people across the UK and Commonwealth ”plant a tree for the Jubilee”. The canopy is set to be a living legacy of The Queen’s reign. Over one million trees were planted for the canopy between October 2021 and March 2022, tree planting season.
The trees in this sculpture will be rooted in aluminium pots embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher. After the Jubilee celebrations are completed, the 350 pots will be given to community groups and organisations across the UK.
The trees will be arranged in a living sculpture that will turn them into branches spreading out from the base of the design.
The project has been supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
The ”Tree of Trees” was revealed on Earth Day 2022.
