True Royalty has two new programmes on their streaming service for subscribers to enjoy. Both focus on past monarchs.
“Edward and Mrs Simpson” and “For King and Country” are both now live on True Royalty.
“Edward and Mrs Simpson” discusses the first monarch in British history who voluntarily gave up his throne. It covers his childhood and his coronation as King Edward VIII. Of course, how he met American divorcĆ©e, Wallis Simpson and how their relationship evolved – leading to anger in the Royal Household and the eventual abdication. You will also learn about an assassination attempt on the former monarch’s life, and how he spent his days post-abdication.
The Duke of Windsor, as he was known after giving up the throne, had bad health for many years, which is discussed, as is the aftermath of his death and the impact it had on Wallis, the Duchess of Windsor.
In “For King and Country”, the subject is the Duke of Windsor’s younger brother, King George VI, who took the throne after his abdication. It begins in 1936 as Albert, Duke of York, takes the throne while Adolf Hitler begins taking over Europe. The documentary discusses how King George VI became Britain’s wartime king. There is a focus on his speech impediment, education, brother’s abdication, and happy life with his wife, Elizabeth, Duchess of York before they ascended the throne. How they handled World War Two is discussed, as is the King’s early death which led to his daughter, Elizabeth, coming to the throne. Queen Elizabeth II will mark 70 years on the throne next year.
