It’s famously one of her favourite times of the year and while the Queen can’t attend this year’s Ascot, she has made sure it’s got off to a very royal start by writing the introduction to the meeting’s racecards. Her words come as she misses the famous meeting for the first time in decades.
The Queen’s words were shared as Royal Ascot got under way for 2020. However, restrictions in place across the UK because of the coronavirus restrictions mean that this year’s meeting will be behind closed doors. Jockeys and trainers taking part in the event will be wearing face masks and social distancing will be in place.
The changes mean that, for the first time in her 68 year reign, the Queen won’t attend Royal Ascot. However, she is understood to be enjoying the races on television.
In her message, Her Majesty said ”I send my best wishes to the thousands of racing professionals and enthusiasts who will join me in celebrating this year’s Royal Ascot.” The Queen continued ”this year, Ascot will feel different for many, as it is so often a chance for friends, families and colleagues to gather together and enjoy a shared passion. I am sure, however, that with the valiant efforts of the organisers, owners, trainers and stable staff, it will remain one of Britain’s finest sporting occasions and a highlight of the racing calendar.”
Royal Ascot runs this year between June 16th and June 20th.
