Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen wears green for Grenfell as she leads the nation in a 72-second silence

The Queen led the nation into a 72-second silence this afternoon to remember those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire one year ago.

Her Majesty remembered the 72 people who died in the inferno during an engagement in Chester alongside her granddaughter-in-law, the Duchess of Sussex.

The 92-year-old Monarch wore a green outfit – the colour which survivors and families have chosen to symbolise the remembrance of those who died in the 24-storey tower block on June 14 last year.

Also taking part in the 72-second silence were the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall In Cork. The royal couple paused an engagement in Ireland for the commemoration.

Families and survivors gathered in Kensington to light candles and to release doves.

The England football team held its own silence in Russia to commemorate the occasion.

The Queen and the Duchess of Sussex were in Chester to officially open the Mersey Gateway Bridge at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre. The Queen and Meghan then officially opened Storyhouse and attended a lunch at Chester Town Hall.
