Prince of Wales looking to add electric cars to his fleet

The Prince of Wales is set to add an electric car to his fleet in the aim to make the Royal Family’s car collection more eco-friendly.

The Prince of Wales was reported to have test-driven a £73,350 black Tesla Model S after making friends with Kimbal Musk, the brother of Elon Musk, founder of Tesla. He hosted Mr Musk and his fiancée at Dumfries House in Scotland which is were the test drive took place.

A Clarence House source said: “There is definitely a plan for us to incorporate electric cars into the Royal fleet.”

The vehicles at the moment run on 100 percent biodiesel made from used cooking oil. Among the fleet is an Aston Martin Volante which has been adjusted to use wine-based fuel.

Other vehicles in the Royal fleet include three Rolls-Royces, three Daimlers and two Bentleys. There are also a handful of Volkswagen support cars. The cars in the Royal Family’s fleet are stored away in the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace.

It is believed there are also ongoing discussions with Jaguar Land Rover in search for electric vehicles. The car manufacturer holds a royal warrant.

The Prince of Wales has previously spoken about the nightmare of plastic pollution and has shown his annoyance at being asked why tackling environmental issues were a priority of this.

It is believed that the Prince’s head driver, Tim Williams, is thought to be planning a visit to a showroom to pick out an electric car.

The Prince of Wales isn’t the only member of the Royal Family with a passion for eco-friendly cars: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left their wedding reception back in May in an electric classic car.

The newlyweds drove to the after-party at Frogmore House in a silver-blue Jaguar E-Type Concept Zero car. It is believed that the couple made a special request for the electric classic car which is based on the 1968 British classic.
