King Charles III

Duchess of Cornwall “never thinks about becoming Queen”

Since marrying Prince Charles in 2005, the Duchess of Cornwall has first spoken about what it is like to join the Royal Family.

Leading up to her 70th birthday this July, the Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine was granted access to Duchess regarding everything from the how her relationship with Prince Charles affected her children to the pressure of marrying into the Royal Family.

‘The minute you stop it’s like a balloon, you run out of puff – you sort of collapse in a heap. I think you live on adrenaline,” the Duchess said when explaining the lifestyle of being Royal.

Even life before becoming royalty was not easy, the news that Prince Charles and Camilla had restarted their early 1970’s romance angered many to the point where Camilla feared leaving her own home.

“I couldn’t really go anywhere,” she said, so she read and learned how to paint.

“But the children came and went as normal – they just got on with it – and so did great friends.

“It was horrid. It was a deeply unpleasant time, and I wouldn’t want to put my worst enemy through it.”

When asked if she is moving on, she replied: “Most definitely, yes.”

The Duchess also speaks about the loss of her brother Mark Shand, who died suddenly in 2014.

“Mark always wanted something. When I heard his voice on the phone saying ‘Camillsy’, I knew immediately that he wanted something. But God, I miss him.”

For the Duchess, time relaxing is spent in Ray Mill in Wiltshire, her own home, where she spends time with her five grandchildren.

The Duchess of Cornwall credits her close friends for keeping her down to earth, who would never fear of telling her to “pull yourself together! Don’t be so bloody grand!” should she ever get to “uppity.”

Other things to help keep the Duchess grounded? Taking things day by day and not thinking about the responsibility of one day being Queen.
