Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece turns 50

His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece celebrates his 50th birthday today.

The eldest son of King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie was born in 1967 at Tatoi Palace in Athens. When he was just seven-months-old, he moved with his family to Rome after the Greek military coup d’état. They would later move to London in 1974. He has one older sister, Princess Alexia, and he has three younger siblings: Prince Nikolaos, Princess Theodora and Prince Philippos.

Pavlos was christened on 29 June 1967 in Athens with the Prince of Wales serving as one of the godparents.

The heir to the now defunct Greek throne also holds the title of Prince of Denmark as a descendant of King Christian IX of Denmark. Christian IX of Denmark was his father and his mother (the former Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark)’s great-great-grandfather.

In 1980, the King and Queen founded the Hellenic College of London, where Pavlos and his siblings attended school in London. It closed in 2005. He graduated in 1986 from the United World College after two years there. He also attended Sandhurst; there he was given the position of position of Commandant’s Stick Orderly. His Royal Highness served as a lieutenant in the British Army. The School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. was where he attended for his university education; he roomed with his first cousin, the now King Felipe of Spain. He received a bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Law and Organisation before gaining a master’s degree in Science in Foreign Relations in the mid-1990s.

Pavlos has worked for Charles R Weber Company Inc, Griphon Asset Management (which he co-founded) and Ivory Capital Group LLC (also co-founded). He currently works for Capital Partners LLC – another business that he helped start. The Crown Prince speaks English, Greek, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

In 1992, he met Marie-Chantal Miller in New Orleans, Louisiana, at a party. They wed on 1 July 1995 in London at St Sophia’s Cathedral with more heads of state in attendance than at the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer. They settled in Connecticut in the United States after their wedding. Together they have five children: Princess Maria-Olympia, Prince Constantine-Alexios, Prince Achileas-Andreas, Prince Odysseus-Kimon and Prince Aristidis-Stavros. The family currently lives in London.
