The Duchy Originals brand was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales back in 1990 to promote organic food and farming and to help protect and sustain the countryside and wildlife. Through Duchy Originals, the Prince believed he could create a ‘virtuous circle’; produce food of the highest quality, work in harmony with environment and nature, use the best ingredients and add value through expert production.
The full Duchy Originals line comprises three elegant shortbreads and the Oaten Biscuit. The Oaten Biscuit was the very first product created for Prince Charles over twenty years ago. The biscuit has a thin, crisp texture and a unique balance between sweet and savoury flavours. The three elegant shortbreads comprise of the Highland All Butter Shortbread, which uses flour made from wheat grown on Duchy Home Farm on the Highgrove Estate. The Lemon All Butter Shortbread and the Stem Ginger All Butter Shortbread complete the elegant shortbread list.
President of Walkers Shortbread Inc., Steve Dawson has commented: “As consumers look for more sustainable food choices, Duchy Originals is proud to meet these needs by offering responsibly produced, organic products. We worked hard to satisfy the requirements for organic certification both in the UK and US”.
Duchy Originals ingredients include no GMO’s, no bovine growth hormones and are also OU Kosher and vegetarian friendly. They are produced using traditional farming methods. Furthermore, the profits from the brand support a number of worthwhile causes through the Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation.
Today, the Duchy Originals are in partnership with Waitrose and they are one of the UK’s leading organic and sustainable food companies. They produce a range of over 250 products, from biscuits to preserves and gifts to garden seeds. Last year, more than £4 million was raised for distribution to charitable causes.
The Duchy Originals is named after the Duchy of Cornwall estates that are held in trust by the Prince of Wales.
