The Earl & Countess of Wessex meet mourners outside Windsor Castle

Edward and Sophie, Earl and Countess of Wessex

The Earl & Countess of Wessex met mourners outside Windsor Castle on Friday, September 16, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday.

Their Royal Highnesses met some of the thousands of people who have gathered in the Berkshire town – a place where The Queen called home for much of her life.

Edward and Sophie viewed many of flowers and tributes left outside of the Castle before speaking to the members of the public.

The walkabout took place just a couple of hours before Prince Edward travelled to Westminster Hall for the Vigil of the Princes at the late Queen’s coffin.

Earlier in the day, Edward released a statement speaking of the ‘unimaginable void’ left in his life by the death of his mother.

His Royal Highness also described how much joy it had given him and his wife, the Countess of Wessex, to see their two children enjoy time with their grandparents.

He said: ”Sophie and I have taken huge pleasure in seeing our James and Louise enjoying the places and activities that their grandparents loved so much. Given that my mama let us spend so much time with her, I think she also rather enjoyed watching those passions blossom. Those times together, those happy memories, have now become massively precious to each and every one of us.”
